    英語勵志美文閱讀

      讓我們微笑吧 Let Us Laugh

      The thing that goes the farthest toward making life worthwhile, that costs the least and does the most, is just a pleasant smile.

      那最能賦予生命價值、代價最廉而回報最多的東西,不過一個令人心暢的微笑而已。

      The smile that bubbles from the heart that loves its fellow men, will drive away the clouds of gloom and coax the Sun again.

      由衷地熱愛同胞的微笑,會驅走心頭陰郁的烏云,心底收獲一輪夕陽。

      It's full of worth and goodness, too, with manly kindness blent; it’s worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

      它充滿價值和美好,混合著堅毅的仁愛之心;它價值連城卻不花一文。

      There is no room for sadness when we see a cheery smile; It always has the same good look; it's never out of style; It nerves us on to try again when failure makes us blue;

      當我們看到喜悅的微笑,憂傷就會一掃而光;它始終面容姣好,永不落伍;失敗令我們沮喪之時,它鼓勵我們再次嘗試;

      The dimples of encouragement are good for me and you.It pays the highest interest — for it is merely lent;

      鼓勵的笑靨于你我大有裨益。它支付的利息高昂無比──只因它是種借貸形式;

      It's worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

      它價值連城卻不花一文。

      A smile comes very easy — you can wrinkle up with cheer. A hundred times before you can squeeze out a salty tear. It ripples out, moreover, to the heartstrings that will tug, and always leaves an echo that is very like a hug.

      來一個微笑很容易──嘴角歡快翹起來,你能百次微笑,可難得擠出一滴淚;它的漣漪深深波及心弦,總會留下反響,宛若擁抱。

      So, smile away! Folks understand what by a smile is meant. It’s worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

      繼續微笑吧!誰都懂得它意味著什么。它價值連城卻不花一文。

      抬頭是希望 The Rise Is Hope

      If you put a buzzard in a pen six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

      如果把一只禿鷲放在一個6~8平方英尺的無頂圍欄里,這只大鳥盡管會飛,也絕對會成為這欄中之囚。原因是禿鷲從地面起飛前總要先助跑10~12英尺的距離。這是它的習慣,如果沒有了足夠的助跑空間,它甚至不會嘗試去飛,只會終身困囿于一個無頂的小囚籠中。

      The ordinary bat that flies around at night, which is a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is to shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

      晚上飛來飛去的普通的蝙蝠,本是一種在空中極其敏捷的動物,但卻無法在平地上起飛。如果被放在地板或平坦的地面上,它就只會無助地挪動,毫無疑問這樣很痛苦。除非它到了稍高的位置,有了落差,才可以立刻閃電般地起飛。

      A bumblebee if dropped into an open tumbler will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

      一只大黃蜂如果掉進了一個敞口平底玻璃杯里,除非有人把它拿出來,否則它就會一直呆在里邊直到死去。它永遠不知道可以從杯口逃出,只堅持試圖從杯底的四壁尋找出路。它會在根本不存在出口的地方尋找出路,直到徹底毀了自己。

      In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not realizing that the answer is right there above them.

      其實在很多方面,很多人也像禿鷲、蝙蝠和大黃蜂一樣,使盡渾身解數試圖解決問題、克服挫折,卻沒有意識到解決之道就在正上方。

      沙子和石頭Sand and Stone

      The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.

      兩個朋友結伴穿越沙漠,旅途中二人突然吵了起來,其中一個摑了對方一記耳光。

      The one who got slapped felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: Today my best friend slapped me in the face.

      被打的人感到自己受了傷害,但什么也沒有說,只是在沙地上寫下了這樣一句話:“今天我最好的朋友摑了我耳光。”

      They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him.

      他們繼續前行,看見到處綠洲,他們正打算在那里洗澡時,剛才被打的人不小心陷入了泥潭,開始深陷,他的朋友救了他。

      After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: quot;Today my best friend saved my life.

      等他從幾近淹死的邊緣蘇醒過來后,他在石頭上刻下:“今天我最好的朋友救了我的命。”

      The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, after I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?

      他的`朋友問:“為什么我傷你之后,你在沙子上寫字,現在卻把字刻在石頭上?”

      The other friend replied: quot; when someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.

      他回答道:“當有人傷害了我們,我們應該把它寫進沙里,寬恕的風會把仇恨抹去。而當有人為我們做了好事,我們應當把它刻在石頭上,沒有風可以將它抹去。”

      PS: 學會寬容,寬容是一種美德;學會感恩,才會更懂得珍惜生命中的一切。“當有人傷害了我們,我們應該把它寫進沙里,寬恕的風會把仇恨抹去。而當有人為我們做了好事,我們應當把它刻在石頭上,沒有風可以將它抹去。”

      差距 Difference

      John and Bobby joined a wholesale company together just after graduation from college the same year. Both worked very hard. After several years, however, the boss promoted Bobby to the position of manager but John remained an ordinary employee. John could not take it anymore, tendered his resignation to the boss and complained the boss did not know how to delegate and did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him.

      約翰和博比同年大學畢業后,被同一家批發公司錄用。他們二人工作都很努力。然而,幾年后,老板提拔博比為部門經理,而約翰還是一名普通員工。約翰再也無法忍受,沖動之下寫了一封辭職信,并抱怨老板不會用人,不重用那些敬業的員工,只提升那些奉承他的人。

      The boss knew that John worked very hard for the years. He thought a moment and said, "Thank you for your criticism, but I have a request. I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you will change your decision and take back your resignation."

      老板知道這幾年約翰工作確實很努力。他想了一會兒說:“謝謝你對我的批評。但是我只有一個請求,我希望在你離開之前再為公司做一件事情。或許到時你會改變決定,收回辭呈。”

      John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out anyone selling watermelon in the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found out a man selling watermelon. The boss asked how much per kg? John shook his head and went back to the market to ask and returned to inform the boss $1.2 per kg.

      約翰答應了。 老板讓他去市場找到一個賣西瓜的人。約翰去了并很快回來。他說他找到了一個賣西瓜的人。老板問他每公斤多少錢?約翰搖搖頭,回到市場去問,然后又回來告訴老板每公斤1.2美元。

      Boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office. He asked Bobby to go and find anyone selling watermelon in the market. Bobby went, returned and said, boss, only one person selling watermelon. $1.2 per kg, $10 for 10kg, he has inventory of 340 melons. On the table 58 melons, every melon weights about 2 kg, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality.

      老板讓約翰等一會兒,這時他把博比叫到辦公室。他讓博比去市場找到一個賣西瓜的人。博比去了,回來之后說:“老板,只有一個賣西瓜的人,每公斤1.2美元,每10公斤賣10美元。這個人一共有340個西瓜,其中58個放在貨架上,每個西瓜重約2公斤,都是兩天前從南方運來的,新鮮,紅瓤,質量好。”

      John was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Bobby. He decided not to resign but to learn from Bobby.

      約翰受到很大的觸動,他意識到自己與博比之間的差距。他決定收回辭呈并向博比學習。

      My dear friends, a more successful person is more observant, thinks more and explores in depth. Chances exist in the daily details. For the same matter, a more successful person sees more and farther so that he can find out an opportunity and catch it to realize his aim. If a person sees one year ahead, while another sees only tomorrow. The difference between a year and a day is 365times, how could you win?

      親愛的朋友們,成功的人更善于觀察,勤于思考和孜孜探求。機遇就存在于生活的細節中。同樣的一件事,一個成功的人會看得更多更遠。有人看到一年后的情景,而你只看到明天。一年與一天的差距是365倍,你怎么能贏呢?

      真正的高貴True Nobility

      In a calm sea every man is a pilot.

      在風平浪靜的大海上,每個人都是領航員。

      But all sunshine without shade, all pleasure without pain, is not life at all.Take the lot of the happiest - it is a tangled yarn.Bereavements and blessings,one following another, make us sad and blessed by turns. Even death itself makes life more loving. Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.

      但只有陽光沒有陰影,只有快樂沒有痛苦,根本不是真正的生活.就拿最幸福的人來說,他的生活也是一團纏結在一起的亂麻。痛苦與幸福交替出現,使得我們一會悲傷一會高興。甚至死亡本身都使得生命更加可愛。在人生清醒的時刻,在悲傷與失落的陰影之下,人們與真實的自我最為接近。

      In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.

      在生活和事業的種種事務之中,性格比才智更能指導我們,心靈比頭腦更能引導我們,而由判斷獲得的克制、耐心和教養比天分更能讓我們受益。

      I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extravagance and waste, I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.

      我一向認為,內心生活開始更為嚴謹的人,他的外在生活也會變得更為簡樸。在物欲橫流的年代,但愿我能向世人表明:人類的真正需求少得多么可憐。

      To regret one's errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance. There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.

      反思自己的過錯不至于重蹈覆轍才是真正的悔悟。高人一等并沒有什么值得夸耀的。真正的高貴是優于過去的自已。
